COVID-19 UPDATE

April 13, 2020

The COVID-19 crisis is affecting all of us in ways no other crisis has. At Abrazo we are doing everything we can to keep our artisan partners in Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico safe and employed. But, like many businesses in the world now, life is getting harder and our business is suffering.

Fortunately, our artisans work at home so they are not unduly exposed to any health risks through their work with us. Unfortunately, demand for our products has dropped and many of our artisans are without work. We have started to produce lightly embroidered masks to keep some artisans employed and to supply donated masks to the communities where we work. (Please let us know if you are interested in ordering and we'll let you know when they become available.) We also are continuing to produce a small amount of product to keep our inventory up for when the skies clear and we can all begin again. We do have inventory available now.

Though Mexico is currently behind the US in the trajectory of the virus, I fear the impact will be more severe. Our team in Mexico is working to educate our artisan partners about social distancing and sanitation to prepare for the impact as businesses shut down and life gets harder. We have also started a Go Fund Me campaign. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the artisans to supplement their income so they can stay safe at home during this time.

We remain hopeful, and if there is any "lemonade out of lemons" to this terrible crisis it's that we are all stopping to check in and take care of one another, a huge part of the mission of fair trade. Your purchases during this time are especially appreciated!

Our best wishes to everyone. Stay safe and stay healthy!
As we say in Mexico: "paso por paso"... one step at a time. We will get through this.
